Why Word Problems?

I volunteer teaching basic mathematics to GED students. I have noticed that many students have little trouble calculating. They can add, subtract, multiply, and divide without difficulty, even when numbers are expressed in mixed forms. But when it comes to interpreting and solving word problems, these same students go all to pieces. So I have decided to post a word problem a day to this blog. The problems are not tricky or especially difficult. They are the kinds of problems students might see on standardized tests. I invite readers to solve the problems and submit their own.

Okay. Some of them are a little tricky....
